Parallel Worlds

[two pro travel journalists turn amateur bloggers]

One night in Cardiff

[words and image © Maciej Dakowicz, The WideAngle]

I shot this image on a Saturday night in Cardiff, in the city centre. Cardiff has a very vibrant weekend night life and I’ve been documenting its after-dark activities since 2005, going out with a camera on a Saturday night and shooting whatever grabbed my attention. I was looking for unusual moments and emotions, trying to capture the spirit of a night out in the UK. After a year or two, my spontaneous photography outings turned into my most serious project.

I spotted this guy leaning on the railing from a distance, wearing this funny costume – he was probably out on a stag night. I rushed towards him, hoping he wouldn’t change his pose. I moved as close as I could, snapped a shot or two and then he noticed me standing right in front of him – he laughed out loud – and that’s it, I knew I had my picture. This is how I remember it, as it happened five years ago already. I don’t really recall what happened after that, I guess I simply moved on…

This image has become my most recognizable image since then. It’s appeared in countless publications (including the book Street Photography Now), websites and several exhibitions. It will also be included in my book Cardiff After Dark, which will be published in Autumn 2012 by Thames&Hudson.

Photo data: Canon EOS 5D mk1 and Canon EF 35mm f/2 lens; 1/30 sec; f/2; Program mode; ISO 1600; no flash
